Apple is gearing up to launch the new iPhone 16 Pro, which will feature a major advancement in photography: a tetraprism periscope camera capable of 5x optical zoom. According to sources within the supply chain, Taiwanese companies Largan Precision and Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO) are the primary suppliers of components for this innovative camera. Both Largan and GSEO are ramping up production in preparation for the anticipated launch of the iPhone 16 this fall.
Largan, which supplied the periscope lenses for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, expects to receive a significant portion of the orders once again. Adam Lin, the company’s president, recently stated that they anticipate record sales in the optical components sector during September to November, coinciding with the release of the new iPhone models.
Meanwhile, GSEO, newly integrated into the supply chain for this component, has undergone promising quality tests. According to DigiTimes, GSEO’s periscope lenses are currently in the validation process, and production could commence in mid-July if all necessary tests are passed.
The tetraprism periscope camera, introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, offers up to 5x optical zoom and 25x digital zoom, a significant improvement over previous models which maxed out at 3x optical zoom. In addition to these advancements in optical zoom, the new camera is expected to bring enhancements in image stabilization and low-light performance.
